Army had just lost to Navy and West Point corps of cadets were pensively singing their school song. The tear stream emanating from the right baby blue eye along with the thoughtful and contemplative countenance suggested something far more than wailing over the ass kicking endured by his team.
The young man captured by a CBS Sports camera appears to be proud of being part of something much bigger than the solidarity experienced by a large group of kids rooting on their team. Around 1 in 75 who apply to the United States Military Academy are accepted. Acceptance is literally a life changing event that influences ones social status, job opportunities, retirement age, choice of spouse, overall quality of life.
A rather alarming side note given the momentous effect of a West Point appointment, is the disarray that is present in all recruiting and enrollment offices. I read that a mistake by an admissions specialist cost a young woman her appointment when her application got lost in the shuffle. I forgot all the details other than a clerk just quit in the middle of her shift and mistakenly, absent mindedly walked out of the office with a folder containing this particular applicant’s paperwork which had taken an enormous amount of time to collect and organize.
