Expected Value Problem from Walpole Statistics Book

The following problem is from Probability and Statistics for Engineers and Scientists Walpole, Myers, and Ye 9th Edition. It deals with the expected value of a density function of coded measurements of the pitch diameter of threads of a fitting.

The solution which follows involves the definition of Expected Value and a Calculus Integral.

Would like to note that this statistics problem which depends on Calculus is helpful to engineers and scientists who are headed into specific technical disciplines, but I would like to see more citizens of the USA take an interest in the mathematics dealing with finance as so many Americans are exploited daily by credit card interest rates, payday and title loans, etc.
