Eccentricities: Iowa Chess

Serious chess players are generally considered to be a little unbalanced owing to the “enormous amount of time wasted” to excel at the game.

I think many might have a bone to pick over the following commentary by Mathew Jacob:

Most Americans do not play chess. Some deaf players do not attend USCF events due to lack of motivation and laziness as some do not practice and they do not work hard to become stronger players. Most deaf people do not play chess because they do not know about chess, do not understand it, or do not know how to play. Most deaf people will pick sports over chess because sports are fast and physical and they have other interests. I find it puzzling that chess which does not require speech is ignored by the American Deaf community. A hearing chessplayer told me about this after his deaf friend told him there seems to be strong peer pressure not to play chess in the deaf community resulting in very few deaf chess players. I have done research about this topic when I attended Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. in the fall of 2012.

I can only say sorry Mathew, not everyone is infected with the chess bug and not everybody can justify the time spent to achieve  some level of proficiency. I share your zeal for the game and will be forever attached to the Royal Game, but you must understand that some level of obsession is necessary to get hooked on chess whether you are deaf or hearing.

Although this is difficult to prove, there is something anal about chess even though one could probably not prove there are more gay chess players than the population in general. Releasing after a long tense weekend chess tournament is easy and almost a necessity.

ROGER KROMPHARDT coach Rivermont Collegiate and tutors, gives specialized chess lessons at his private residence. After the chess lesson, he is also a skilled relationship professional specializing helping all experience joyful and meaningful bonding with that special someone! It only takes him 10 hours to do this. Not sure what he charges, but it is bound to be worth it since it takes many their entire life experiencing many painful and expensive divorces. Man if I could do that for people I would give up chess and just help all the lonely people til I croaked.

  1. I mean that there is probably no more pressure in the deaf community to not play chess than in the general population. By bone to pick, I mean that I was challenging your claim. I knew two deaf chess players in Texas .

  2. Did anybody see the episode of detective movie Columbo where child prodigy is playing Chess against robot. Kid checkmates robot and it tips over board in anger. Kid genius said he switched some circuits like he was proud but really admitting he cheated.
