Radon gas is present in varying concentrations in most US homes. Many reliable sources claim that Radon gas, second to cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. I learned about this, in of all places, a movie theater where a young lawyer was urging viewers to get their abodes tested for high concentrations of this harmful substance.
Shockingly, more than 4 picocuries per liter of air of Argon gas is considered to be a risk for lung ailments including cancer. A curie is a unit of radioactivity. This, of course, begs the question what is a curie? A curie is equivalent to being exposed to the radioactivity liberated by 1 gram of the radium isotope. One picocurie is one billionth of a curie. So 4 billionths of curie or more is considered harmful!
I had heard or read that getting professional to come to your home to measure its Radon gas concentration was expensive to the tune of $250, so I was ecstatic when I received this Ace Hardware email advertisement for a Do It Yourself Radon Gas Test Kit for the equally shocking price of only $12.99. Man, that sounds a Helluva lot better than the guys in the goggles coming out for $250! But, it also sounded too good to be true and we all know the conclusion associated with that adage.
Sure enough, fairly prominently posted on the test kit package was that there is a $30 lab analysis fee required for Standard Lab Results(I guess you might be able to pay more than $30 for a larger array of test results ?! dunno). Even more likely is that it will be revealed that the $30 is a bare minimum and they will try to scare you into paying more for the welfare of your family. Oh, we all know that advertising is inherently deceptive don’t we?
In any event, this is still much less expensive than having to schedule for a professional to come out to your home for $250, but just wanted to let folks know that if you order this kit online, it is easy to be overly excited about the low price of the test kit itself and overlook the the relatively more expensive lab fee.
