We recently quit using the online TransUnion credit report/Identity theft service. We used it for quite some time prior to moving into our new home to be sure our credit score would be high enough to get the lowest possible interest rate on our mortgage.
The fee for the service was $19.95 a month. After getting into our new house we continued using TransUnion, but eventually decided to cancel it because of the high monthly price. When we tried to cancel over the phone, the service representative quickly offered to reduce our monthly rate to $9.95 which we accepted for a few months before eventually cancelling the credit monitoring service.
Just today we received this resubscribe solicitation from TransUnion warning us that You’ve stopped paying attention to your credit. Someone else might be starting. This scare tactic is not an effective way to get folks to use a service. They are right in declaring that it takes a long time to restore your identity once it has been stolen or compromised.
TranUnion did lie about one thing on this particular solicitation. They claim that you get 24/7 email alerts from all three credit bureaus if your identity has been stolen or tampered with. This is false. When we had the service with TransUnion, Experian reports and data never changed and credit score never changed for an entire year. The Equifax and TransUnion credit reports and credit scores changed quite a bit but NOT Experian.
