This summer, for the third year, the American Association of University Women of New Mexico (AAUW-NM) will again be operating Tech Trek, a week long residential STEM camp for New Mexico girls who will be going into 8th grade. And this year, we will be on the NM Tech campus. Girls will live (well supervised!) (no hanky panky with boys) in student housing, and participate in workshops and activities aimed at familiarizing them with the many options that are available to them in a future STEM career. The camp is funded by donations and grants, so the only expense for the family is the $50 registration fee. If the fee would be a hardship for the family, there is scholarship money available based on need.

Nomination by a math or science teacher is the first step in the application process. The nomination form is attached here, and must be received by January 31, 2016. No more than five girls per school, please. After a girl has been nominated, she will receive an application form, asking about her interests and goals, and requiring a short essay. It would be helpful if the teacher followed up on this, as many girls never actually complete the application. Once the applications are received, each girl and a parent or guardian will be assigned a time and place for an interview that will be convenient for them. Selection is made by a committee based on a number of factors, and it’s a very difficult job considering the impressive applicants we see. We are only able to accommodate 50 girls, and wish we could take more.

We have been encouraged by the feedback we have received from our last two Tech Treks, the first at NMSU and last year at NM Highlands in Las Vegas. The girls had a wonderful time, and the parents felt comfortable with the safety level and the caring supervision. We have been successful in recruiting workshop instructors and camp counselors who are great role models. One mother told me, “She’s been home for two days now, and she still can’t stop talking about it!”

If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.

    1. Wonder what it is like to be a real chemistry teacher at J. P. Wynne High School in Albuquerque living in the shadow of brian Cranston? What a temptation to chase the big bucks of cooking that crystal blue!

  5. We moved from Albuquerque to Houston,TX due to the shortage of engineering jobs in New Mexico. We owe a debt of gratitude and our very well being to the consulting, engineering, business job placement group headed by Melyana Klew or Klue. I believe Mrs Klue sells specialty insurance products as well.

My husband has a job he loves thanks to this woman who was involved in placing him in a profession he dearly loves!
