Caring for Crazy People is Expensive

Effusive thanks to Irene Barnard for taking the time to write about the effects of the  high levels of mentally ill people on our health care system in the United States! The Santa Rosa, California native is well intentioned in her compassion and shock regarding how our nation is dealing with staggeringly high numbers of delusional, psychotic, and schizophrenic citizens.

Unfortunately Irene, the mentally healthy have to spend much of their waking hours caring for themselves and their families. If you want to clear your conscious on the ethical and moral failures of our country to care for the mentally infirmed, then give up some of your time and hard earned money to take care of them. You are quick to criticize the policies of hospitals and our government for not doing enough for head cases, but what are you doing to help them? The weak and fragile animals of the world either adapt or perish.

They highlight(the poor and the mentally sick) a major public health emergency in this county — and in the United States, as well.

Some may not think these issues concern them, but 20 percent of Americans suffer from mental illness, and severe psychiatric crises impact hospital emergency rooms and the safety of other people.

Of course there are the moral and ethical failures in letting these severely ill people decline — sometimes fatally — right in front of us.
