Artesia doctor Roberto Labayen must have decided that humor is the most important way to reach people who have bladder control or incontinence problems. This urologist sent out a snail mail advertisement to much of southeastern New Mexico which opened with Thank you for calling the incontinence hotline… Can you please hold?!?
Pretty funny for a comedian I guess, but for a medical doctor maybe a little over the top. I am not trying to impugn the credentials of Dr. Labayen. Advertising is a critical component in the profitability of so many enterprises and often just getting a potential patient’s attention for a few seconds is enough to get their business. The elderly population in Carlsbad, Artesia, and Roswell is higher than the national average I think, so it is understandable that an incontinence ad made it to our mailbox.
Also maybe the joke is on this writer. Perhaps this doctor tried sending out informative advertisements on how he treats incontinence and did not attract many new patients. Professional comedians sometimes change up their acts randomly to improve the effectiveness of their performance and the same is true in advertising. Have you ever noticed how advertisers will run a different commercial from the original in the very same TV show? Lawyers, Accountants, Physicians, and many other professionals try the same thing to expand the size of their client base with creative attention-grabbing advertising.
Categorizing this as a rant is a little shaky on my part, but part of me would prefer to see a more serious doctor.
