Security Peepholes and Proposition 65

We bought a high quality security peephole at Home Depot which was an easy installation for anybody with a drill and a 9/16 inch bit. The peephole was branded Defender Security Entry made out of solid brass, and fit snugly into the 9/16 inch hole I drilled in our front door.

I get tired of seeing these proposition 65 cancer warnings on products that are “known” by the state of California to cause cancer. The disclaimer you see in picture of the security peephole package states ” This product contains one or more chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.”

Read more about the specifics of Proposition 65 in Daland R. Juberg’s paper. He is the PHD who signed off on a long list of items that caused cancer in laboratory animals back in December 2000.

Please understand this writer recognizes the need for the watch dog type of media, reporting, and politicians(Nora Espinoza of NM is fine example) who keep manufacturers honest protecting the health of this country’s citizens, but putting warning labels on everything, while well intentioned can cause unnecessary fear and concern

  1. A neighbor replaced his peephole with Canon security camera and also has a door brace or jammer. Aesthetically, I don’t like a big viewing window camera hanging on the middle of our interior door wall. Our peephole has a 220 degree viewing radius and is not so gaudy looking.

  2. There has been some buzz about proposition 65 and Applebee’s restaurant. It is probably being spread by disgruntled former employee. Proposition 65 can be expensive for employers to follow, but I doubt Applebee’s is cutting any corners.

  3. Cobra radar detectors are also prop 65, maybe because of their electrical cords. WARNING: The wires of this product contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.
