A common theme among high dollar advertisers these days is an elderly woman saying something sexual with the intent of, ever so briefly, grabbing the attention of people who would prefer no commercials during sporting events.
Sondra James did the honors for Bavarian Motor Works aka BMW during the first half of the Kentucky/Wisconsin final four game Saturday night. She transitioned from a remark made by the mother of the family driver about the leather upholstery. James, playing the grandmother, then said to the husband passenger that “your grandfather liked me wearing leather, he was a very dominant man you know?”. The commercial ends about this time with son admonishing mother to cease her callous divulging of something intimate.
We all sell out to some extent to make money. Sometimes, we have to kiss our boss or supervisor’s ass at work to keep the peace in order to pay rent and put food on the table. I would love to know how much BMW paid Sondra James for her shock value remarks. Also I would like to know how parents answer the “Mommy, what did the old lady mean about leather and domination?” from their 5 year old kids.
Finally, BMW must be desperate when they have to resort to these type of “lurid” tactics to sell their vehicles rather than push the high quality of their iconic brand.
