I became familiar with the Albanian term Kanun while reading The Moral Landscape by Sam Harris.
An English synonym for Kanun is reprisal which means injury done for injury received. An example of an act of Kanun would be if a man kills somebody, the family of the man who was murdered can kill any one of the male relatives of the murderer.
I maintain that if every murderer knew death awaited him for his choice to extinguish the life of another person, there would be much less violence in this world.
The author of the book attempts to simplify questions of good and evil via science relying on the straightforward assertion that human well-being depends entirely on external events and the brains reactions to said events. In short, he is moving questions of morality and ethics from the domain of religion to the more tractable abode of science!!
