I have heard the term waylay used frequently in tv westerns. It is a synonym for ambush and was used by Robert Duval’s character(boss or bluebonnet spearman) in the movie Open Range. Button a young Mexican boy was part of a free graze cattle herding group who clashed with a man named Baxter, a rancher who owned a town Marshal in Colorado. Button was waylaid by Baxters men   and almost died before being nursed backed to health by Anette Benning’s character.

Waylay, not surprisingly, means to lay in wait. The word came into usage from 1505–15 wegelagen to lie in wait, (deriv. of wegelage a lying in wait)
